Heritage at Carefree Retirement Living earns more resident accolades
CAREFREE – There’s a consensus at the Heritage at Carefree Retirement Living. “Everyone is so nice here,” agreed nine-month residents, Dee Carter and Harold Stevens. “It’s an easy-going place,” Carter added. “It’s an extremely well-run facility,” Stevens followed up.
The Heritage has a lot of perks, one of the favorites being three good meals a day. The units - studio, one bedroom and two - do have kitchenettes so folks living there can prepare their own meals if they wish. On Wednesdays, owner Donna Holbura or one of her staff will take a group of the residents out for lunch and/or shopping in the Mercedes Sprinter. There’s weekly housekeeping and laundry service (or residents can do their own on-site).

New techniques make RFID tags 25 percent smaller
Engineering researchers at North Carolina State University have developed a suite of techniques that allow them to create passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags that are 25 percent smaller – and therefore less expensive. This is possible because the tags no longer need to convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) in order for the tags to function effectively.
In passive RFID technology, a “reader” transmits a radio signal that is picked up by the RFID tag. The tag converts the AC of the radio signal into DC in order to power internal circuits. Those circuits control the signal that is bounced back to the reader. Passive RFID technology is used in everything from parking passes to merchandise and asset tracking. For example, passive RFID is the technology that tells a traffic barrier to lift when you wave a parking pass in front of the scanner.

USDA releases results of new survey on honey bee colony health
WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agriculture Statistics Service (NASS) released the results of its first ever Honey Bee Colony Loss survey today. The survey queried more than 20,000 honey beekeepers about the number of colonies, colonies lost, colonies added, and colonies affected by certain stressors and gleans state-level estimates on key honey bee health topics. The survey was developed as part of the "National Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Bees and Other Pollinators" released last summer, and gleans state-level estimates on key pollinator health topics.
