Shelter kennels overflowing!
Maricopa County Animal Care & Control (MCACC) shelters are overcapacity and the agency is asking the public for help. As the Valley’s only open intake shelter, MCACC does not turn away any dog or cat. In the past five days, MCACC shelters have received 580 stray or unwanted pets. MCACC’s staff is currently caring for 817 animals between their Mesa and Phoenix locations.

Tips to protect health in extreme heat
Following the heat advisory for southwest Arizona issued by the National Weather Service, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reminds local residents about steps they should take to protect their health from the extreme heat.
“People may not often think about it but extreme heat can have devastating effects on health,” said Dr. Nicole Lurie, HHS assistant secretary for preparedness and response (ASPR). “Young children, older adults, and people on certain medications can be particularly vulnerable to heat. Recognizing the signs of heat stress and knowing what to do can save a life.”

PHOENIX – The Arizona Game and Fish Department reminds local sportsmen’s organizations that the deadline to apply for $75,000 in annual grant funding is 5 p.m. (MST) Thursday, July 14. Postmarks do not count.

Grand Canyon National Park gets its stamp of approval
GRAND CANYON, Arizona — A local dedication ceremony today marked the issuance of a stamp depicting the magnificent beauty of Grand Canyon National Park – one of 16 stamps commemorating the National Park Service’s 100th anniversary. The public is asked to share the news of the stamps’ issuance on social media by using the hashtags #NPSStamps, #FindYourPark or #NPS100.

World Blood Donor Day is June 14
PHOENIX — The American Red Cross is partnering with Nexcare Bandages and supermodel Niki Taylor to urge eligible blood and platelet donors to give this June in honor of World Blood Donor Day on June 14.
