Local DAR pays tribute to National DAR Day of Service

Scottsdale-chartered Grand Canyon Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) participated in a special service project Sunday, October 11 at Mary Ellen’s Place to honor the society’s National Day of Service, joining a DAR coast to coast celebration of the 125th anniversary of the founding of DAR and its commitment to local community outreach.

Mary Ellen’s Place, located in north central Phoenix and named for Mary Ellen Piotrowski, a US Navy veteran, offers an affordable solution in housing to the valley’s women veterans. It provides a supportive home with no limit on age or tenancy and assists in preventing homelessness through affordable rent. Women veterans who need to decompress are given a safe environment which prepares them for reintegration back into their families and previous social atmospheres.

Grand Canyon Daughters, through the chapter’s DAR Service to Veterans committee, worked alongside residents in cleaning the home and sharing a pot luck lunch and socialization. The chapter’s donations included cleaning supplies and five sets of bedding.

DAR, founded in 1890, is a non-profit, non-political women’s service organization dedicated to patriotic endeavor, historic preservation and better education for children and is open to any woman 18 years or older who can trace her lineal descent to a Revolutionary War patriot.
