MCSO teams up with American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life
District IV Survivors will participate in the event to be held from 6 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, March 7
CAVE CREEK – Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office District IV Capt. Kip Rustenburg (r) spoke during Call to the Public on Monday to tell people about MCSO’s involvement in the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay for Life next month.
Relay for Life, the ACS’s nationwide signature event, combines fundraising with education, advocacy and programs for those concerned about cancer.
Relay for Life is an overnight event that emphasizes the fact that cancer never sleeps as team members take turns walking the track, demonstrating just as cancer never sleeps, neither do they for this one night.
The event will also include a luminaria ceremony, combining a celebration of survivors and memories of those lost to cancer, as luminarias decorated with names of loved ones line the track. It is considered the most moving and memorable part of the evening.
There will also be food, fun, games and entertainment as all those participating enjoy the camaraderie in a race for the cure.
Rustenburg said they have formed a team called District IV Survivors, who will participate in the event to be held from 6 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, March 7 at the MCSO Training Center, 2627 S. 35th Ave., Phoenix.
Rustenburg reached out to the community for donations, either monetary or items than can be auctioned.
The money they raise will help to support services, free of charge to cancer patients and their families, education, advocacy and research.
Anyone interested in contributing to help make the MCSO Relay for Life event and especially the District IV Survivors team a success should contact Rustenburg at 602-876-1742 or [email protected].
