Falcons off to a “running” start

joe kuhlmannStarring two seniors, running back Joe Kuhlmann (l-top) and linebacker Corey Harper (r-bottom), the Falcons got their 2013 season off to more than a running start – literally! Kulmann gashed the Raymond Kellis defense for 253 rushing yards of Cactus Shadows’ 400, good for four touchdowns, as the HomeBirds whomped the visiting Cougars, 55-20. Quad-Captain Harper paced the Falcon “D” with his combination of one INT and snagging (in the air!) a blocked Kellis punt in the Cougars’ end zone, good for his first varsity touchdown. MaxPreps.com named Kuhlmann and Harper “Players of the Game.”

corey harperFalcons led their home opener wire-to-wire. By halftime, they had raced to a game over 34-0 margin. In the second half, Head Coach Greg Davis took his pedal off the metal, giving liberal playing time to his reserve troops. The ‘Birds still “won” the last two quarters, 21-20. Nice work, Falcons!

On the downside, the Falcons managed only 19 passing yards, an “O” imbalance they’ll be out to correct next Friday night at Willow Canyon, way out west in Surprise. According to Coach Davis, the Wildcats played “very competitively” in their opening game 20-41 loss to Division 1 Valley Vista. Falcons will return home to host always-tough Apollo, Thursday night, Sept. 12. But Wildcats come first, then Hawks.
