U-Turn signal in Anthem
Gavilan Peak Parkway traffic safety project uses latest traffic signal technology
ANTHEM – Anthem drivers will be among the first to start using a newly adopted international U-turn arrow traffic signal system. The Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is installing the new traffic signal on Gavilan Peak Parkway north of Phoenix as part of a traffic safety improvement project starting construction this weekend.
“MCDOT is at the forefront in using state-of-the-art traffic technologies to improve traffic safety on Maricopa County roads,” said Chairman Andy Kunasek, Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.
The new U-turn light was specifically designed for use at signalized intersections with “U-turn Only” lanes. Using robust high flux LED technology, it displays a lighted U-turn symbol during the green, yellow, and red signal phasing cycles. The environmental and economic benefits include low wattage, long life and an abrasion resistant lens coating, all designed to maximize energy savings while reducing upkeep and maintenance costs.
MCDOT traffic safety improvements include modifications to the center median and the installation of a “U-turn Only” lane, featuring the new U-turn traffic signal, on Southbound Gavilan Peak Parkway at the signalized intersection with the entrance to Boulder Creek High School.
To minimize inconvenience to motorists, construction will take place over six consecutive weekends beginning Friday, April 12, 2013. Work will begin at 5 p.m. each Friday and some night work may be required. Project completion is slated for mid-May 2013.
