Students honored
The participants of the this year’s Boys and Girls State Program sponsored by Legion Post 34 and the Legion’s Auxiliary in Cave Creek were recently honored with a Saturday Brunch with their parents and guests at the Cave Creek Legion Post.
Crepes, apple turnovers and Belgian waffles were served, prepared by Leo Reardon, the Post’s Vice Commander in charge of events.
The Boys and Girls State project was applied for by students at Cactus Shadows High School. Those selected demonstrated honor, courage, leadership, patriotism, scholarship and service to their school and community. This year’s honorees were Kyle Aaron Beeks, Saige Williams, Brenna Leech and Ashley Butcher.
Delegates to the Girls State are selected by Chairman Judy Reardon, President of the Post’s Auxiliary and the Boys State Representative by Barbara Owings former Commander and Adjutant of the Post’s Legion Board of Directors.
Each summer the girl delegates attend a week session at The University of Arizona and boys attend a state meet at the Northern Arizona University.
They form Political Parties, elect Representatives and draft Legislation. Its purpose is to educate young men and women in the privileges, rights and duties of American Citizenship, preparing them for the responsibilities they will assume as adults.
Two members of Girls State and two members of Boys State from each state attend Boys and Girls Nation for a week in Washington D.C.
