Candlelight vigil on five-year anniversary of murdered youth
PHOENIX – A candlelight vigil will be held to honor the memory of murdered gay youth Maurice Dupree Green, at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 21, at Cielito Park, 3402 W. Campbell Ave. Green, also known as “Melissa,” was fatally shot on March 21, 2006, as he walked northbound on 35th and Glenrosa avenues dressed as a woman.
Attendees are asked to gather at Cielito Park and together as a group, everyone will proceed to the site where Green was fatally shot. “We must continue to honor Maurice’s memory and let the public know that the Police still need information to solve this crime. Crimes such as these should never be tolerated in our community,” said Phoenix City Councilman Tom Simplot.
After five years, Green’s murder remains unsolved. Anyone with information about his murder should contact Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or toll free at 1-800-343-TIPS. A cash reward of up to $4,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of the suspected killer.
