Two key events to honor the fallen

Anthem – Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who gave their lives in service to the United States military. Two events will be held this year to honor the fallen. The Daisy Mountain Veteran (DMV) Flag 5k/10K Trail Run will return on Saturday, May 25th. The annual Memorial Day ceremony, “A Day of Remembrance,” will take place at the Anthem Veterans Memorial, Monday, May 27 at 9:00 a.m.

Saturday, May 25, 7:00 a.m. The public is invited to join the Daisy Mountain Veteransat the patriotic DMV Flag 5k or 10k Trail Run/Hike, Saturday, May 25, to pay tribute to the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this great nation. Participants may choose to carry their 35-pound rucksack for either run/hike. All donations and a portion of the proceeds will go to the local Anthem – Daisy Mountain Veterans.

Tells local race event coordinator Chuck Hale (USMC, VFW Post 12031 commander and DMV member), “This event is another opportunity for the community to honor all those who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

We hope everyone who participated last May will join us again this year and bring their family and friends. We encourage every participant and spectator to carry an American flag during the event, held high and proud. Teams or individuals are welcome and the event will have a local group open for anyone to join after event registration.”

Event Highlights

  • Registration on event day also is permitted with slight price increase.
  • Event Check-in – 0600-0640 hours (6:00 a.m. – 6:40 a.m.). Event Race Briefing – 0645 hours (6:45 a.m.)
  • Event Start – 0700 hours promptly (7:00 a.m.)
  • Two distance options – either the 5k or the 10k. Participants may run or hike the course with or without their35lb rucksack.
  • Both courses are an out and back on the very scenic Black Canyon Trails.
    This is a no-cup event to prevent extra waste. Please bring either a handheld water bottle or a Camelback bladder.
    There will be emergency water on the course. The stations will be directed by US Marine Veterans, so participants might have to do a few burpees for the water. -more-
    Annual Memorial Day Ceremony, “A Day of Remembrance.”

    The public is invited to honor and remember those members of the US Armed Forces who died while serving our nation and those who remain missing in action at the annual Memorial Day ceremony held at the Anthem Veterans Memorial (AVM). The ceremony is planned and hosted by the Daisy Mountain Veterans (DMV), VFW Post 12031 and American Legion Post 128.
    Ceremony Highlights: This year’s ceremony will highlight the personal stories of servicemen and women commemorated at the AVM who were killed in action and who remain missing in action.
    Keynote: The keynote address will be given by CWO4 Samuel Rodriguez, Jr. (USN, Retired), whose personal reflection of this day will touch the hearts of all in attendance.
