The Cup

Don Senneville and Jim White

Coffee is wonderful with a slice of Apple Strudel. So why do we have to go to Rocky Point to find that perfect match? The KAFFEEHAUS is the reason. Tucked in between shrimp boats and dentists, this German transplant establishment is “wunderbar”! A tiny cup of espresso with a whip cream hat accompanies a 1 kilo piece of STRUDEL which is served by tri-lingual baristas. I wish we had Euros. They have nothing to go. Don was out of luck. We did get to practice our German. Jim made a D+ in college in German, but we carried on with some success. That grade used to mean almost average.

Turns out Rocky Point has quite an international reputation. Al Capone’s Pizza, Linda Ronstadt, Sushi Bars, Roger Cline, Wrecked on the Reef, Manny’s, a German KaffeeHaus and our favorite MX restaurant, La Curva. Chileen’s Satisfied Frog too?

Cruising home we pass through oddly named settlements such as Why, Ajo, Gila Bend, Buckeye, Cave Creek and Carefree. Back to our unique stretch of Coffee shops that we have enjoyed the past few months. Glad to be home. However, Don’s on assignment, again, this time to Sedona where he is researching “Vortex” influenced coffee beans. We are told Funk’s Firecreek beans meet vortex criteria (but they’re in The Village of Oak Creek – we’re not clear on the vortexness (vortexity?) of the Village. We look forward to hearing more. You might remember Don was researching leaves in Ecuador. He’s taking up his assignment now, ready to focus on coffee shops in Sedona. Jim’s headed to Winslow.

Don reports that Sedona has far fewer coffee shops and more EV charging stations for its size than we do on our “Rodeo Drive” of Carefree and Cave Creek (hope you liked the map last week), but they may make up for it by having a couple that are, well, interesting.

One is Chocolatree on 89A. Here’s what they say about their coffee: Now exclusively available at Chocolatree Organic Oasis, we offer this AMAZING coffee blend from the Mother Earth Restoration Trust, imported from the center of the world from the Columbian Mountains. We now roast the sacred whole beans in-house as a peaceful offering to benefit our Earth Mother. . . and so on. Don didn’t think he could get a to-go cup there, for fairly obvious reasons. So he ordered the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and stayed in the jungle-like outdoor setting to drink it. The other shop is Layla’s Bakery-Cafe.

They have an espresso machine, and they also brew their coffee. You stand in line, and wait till they hand you your order. Their food menu is unique. G&G Chia Pudding? Don was interested in the Power Bowl. They’re a real bakery, too, and their offerings include Kouign Amann? (which turns out to be a French pastry), and Don’s favorite, the blueberry scone. So from Apple Strudel in Mexico to Scones in Sedona we continue our quest for The CUP.
