Protect the public

Dear Editor of the Sonoran News,

For years, we have faced the problem of receiving surprise medical bills after emergency healthcare because the insurance companies deemed them out of network, or found some other reason not to cover emergency lifesaving treatments. Congress saw the problem, and passed the No Surprises Act to fix the problem.  Unfortunately, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Secretary Becerra decided to ignore the intent of Congress, and placed rate setting schemes that left our doctors and hospitals in the lurch, and strongly benefitted the large insurance companies. This is extremely unfair to our rural hospitals and doctors, threatening their very existence.

Luckily, the courts recognized this, and threw the rules out. Now the HHS has the chance to make things right and protect patients and frontline health professionals by following the intent of the bill.  Senator Kelly and our Congressional Delegation need to tell the HHS to get it right this time, and protect the public, not the insurance companies.
Sincerely,

Markus Brooks
