1983 – 2017

Corporal George “Gigi” Almasan, 34, was laid to rest at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona on December 30, 2017 at 9:30am.  Funeral services were on Friday December 29, 2017 at 11:00am at the Happy Valley Romanian Reception Hall (24535 N. 15th Ave Phoenix, AZ).  He was an Army Veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom including two deployments in Afghanistan.  He was awarded the Purple Heart and 12 additional awards including the Combat Infantry Badge, the Expert Infantry Badge, and 3 Army Commendation Medals during his time of service.

Corporal Almasan was born on May 8, 1983 in Phoenix, AZ to Corneliu and Rebeca Almasan.  Corporal Almasan graduated from Independence High School in 2001.  In 2004, he joined the United States Army Infantry and was assigned to Charlie Company 258 for boot camp and Infantry school.  He completed Airborne school in 2004.  He was wounded in combat in 2007 and awarded the Purple Heart.  He was discharged with full honors in 2008.

Post his military career, he completed an Associate of Occupational Studies Respiratory Therapy from Kaplan College (2010) and an Associate of Applied Science in Graphic Design from The Art Institute of Phoenix (2016).  He was very active in the Wounded Warrior Project and enjoyed playing soccer, hiking, and watching the Arizona Cardinals especially Larry Fitzgerald.

Corporal Almasan was a devout Christian who wanted nothing more than to serve the Lord.  He was incredibly humble and gave all the glory of his accomplishments to God.  Corporal Almasan had strong family values and a tremendous love for his family and friends. He was loving grandson of Aurora and Viorel Almasan and Maria and Cornel Trif, son of Corneliu and Rebeca Almasan, nephew to many aunts and uncles, brother to Cory, Lily, Becky, Josh, Joe, Daniel, and the late Estera Almasan, uncle to his niece and nephews, cousin, and friend to many.

He is extremely missed by all. May he always be remembered with the deepest love.
