Our public lands: The bedrock of American hunting and angling

Dear Editor:

On Sept. 30, hunters, anglers and public land owners from across the country will celebrate National Public Lands Day and speak up for our 900 million acres of public lands, set aside by generations of conservationists before us.

Our uniquely American public lands system remains the bedrock of our American sporting traditions – the one guarantee that you’ll always have a place to hunt, fish, camp and recreate, regardless of whether you’re an investment banker in New York City or a construction worker from Utah. Despite the overwhelming popularity of our public land system, however, some misguided decision makers are willing to relinquish our opportunities to experience the overwhelming sense of freedom and solace that our wild public lands provide. The relentless attacks on our lands and waters take many forms, ranging from outright sales to egregious budget cuts to the agencies charged with managing our shared heritage.

This September, I urge every public land owner to join me and Backcountry Hunters & Anglers: Call your members of Congress at 202-224-3121 and ask them to stand up for our American public lands

Sincerely,

Justin Nelson
