During Public Comments during the March 7, 2023 Carefree Town Council meeting, several residents were calmly questioning why the town council was supporting a property tax while neglecting to first develop the NE corner of Carefree Hwy & Cave Creek Road (one of the most valuable pieces of property in Carefree). The mayor was clearly unnerved by the public comments about this undeveloped NE corner and rattled by residents wishing to hear the full and complete comments from every speaker. But the mayor had clearly had enough and did not wish to allow a certain speaker to finish. When challenged about his decision to not grant additional time to the eloquent speaker, Mayor Crane decried his reason as “because I make the rules!” The audience erupted in laughter. “Because I make the rules” sounds like something a king would say, not the mayor of a small town (who I thought was supposed to adhere to Robert’s Rules of Order).
