Incorrect Information about the General Plan

I am concerned about false information circulating in Cave Creek regarding the proposed 2018 General Plan. I have seen written materials that are based on text that is not there. Surely we should agree on the facts.

One such assertion is that the General Plan proposes massive bridges on Spur Cross Road and Schoolhouse Road. Many Creekes tell us that they prefer the present crossings that are occasionally closed by flood waters. They are a treasured part of life in our unique rural community. One resident told me that such bridges are a “deal breaker.” I respect such passion for our community. We listened. The final plan states, “Policy/Action: Discourage new roadway crossings or enhancement of existing roadway crossings of Apache Wash, Ocotillo Wash, Cave Creek Wash and other significant washes.”

I was surprised at the traction the incorrect information got among people whom I respect; people who have made important contributions to Cave Creek. But I am grateful to the Planning Commission for their quick and detailed written response. (This public document is available through Town staff.)

Some voters will oppose the General Plan. It’s no surprise that we can’t please everyone. But I hope we can agree on the content of the General Plan and base our opinions on what’s actually there.

The General Plan can be readily downloaded as a 3.3 mb PDF file on the Town web site. I wish it were less than 79 pages. But what should have been left out? Some would say 2 ½ pages of town history is not needed. I’d suggest that where we’ve come from is important in determining where we’re headed in the future. Besides, it’s a good read as a synopsis of how we’ve become the Cave Creek of 2018.

We will be entering a political season as the August 28 primary election approaches. I doubt I need to tell you how candidates can manipulate or abuse the facts in a charged political environment. Opposition or support for the General Plan will probably be front and center in this election. But there are two things i hope the voters will keep in mind. First, if it doesn’t seem reasonable that the Commission and Council would endorse certain outrageous ideas, we probably don’t. Secondly, please take a little time to contact Council members, members of the Planning Commission or staff to verify information that most voters would find objectionable. The text may, or may not, be there. Every vote is important. Please base your’s on verified facts.
