Motorcyclist dead in Carefree Highway crash

Carefree Highway was closed for several hours early Wednesday morning, April 11, due to a fatal crash involving a motorcycle. The accident occurred about 1:30 am when 46 year-old Howard G. Evans was heading westbound on Carefree Highway and struck the median. According to Phoenix Police, he was thrown into oncoming eastbound traffic and was struck by a vehicle. The operator of that vehicle remained at the scene and was cooperative with police. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

This is the second fatal motorcycle accident in the local area in less than a month. On the evening of March 18 at around 5:40 pm, 53 year-old Vincent Rollen was travelling eastbound on Cave Creek Road just west of Pima Road. When he entered the gravel median and struck a three foot barrel cactus in the median. As a result of the impact with the cactus, Rollen was thrown from the motorcycle. He was not wearing a helmet.
