PHOENIX – The Arizona Game and Fish Department has contacted several federal land management agencies and offered its staff and services, if needed, to maintain public access to key Arizona recreational areas during the federal government shutdown.
“Outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, boating, OHV riding and wildlife viewing are huge economic drivers in Arizona,” said Arizona Game and Fish Director Ty Gray. “We are prepared to work with the agencies to keep public access open because outdoor recreation is so important to the economy of the state and to local communities. Hunters and anglers also provide the bulk of wildlife conservation funding in Arizona.”
It is uncertain which recreational areas or public lands may close during the shutdown. Arizona Game and Fish has been identifying key areas, such as wildlife refuges and boat ramps, where it might offer resources including law enforcement. During the shutdown, there are still many other recreational opportunities available in Arizona.
“We want outdoors enthusiasts to know that Arizona is open for business, so head out and enjoy the resource,” said Gray.
Arizona Governor Doug Ducey on Friday announced that during the federal government shutdown, the state of Arizona will provide resources to keep the Grand Canyon open. The state is partnering in this effort with the National Park Service, with help from Arizona State Parks and Trails and the Arizona Office of Tourism.
