Vocal Scholarship Auditions to be held Tuesday, Sept. 15
September 2, 2009
Area expanded this year to include Anthem, New River
This year the Upscale Singers are able to offer six scholarships for young singers for vocal music lessons – twice the number they’ve offered in the past! Three high school and three junior high students have a chance to win support for vocal music lessons with the teacher of their choice.
Prize moneys are paid directly to the private vocal instructor of the winner’s choice, and must be used within one year after receiving the award.
First place in the high school division is $600, second place $400, and third place $300. With the junior high division the awards are $500, $300 and $200.
In addition to the scholarship funds, the young singers are featured in the Upscale Singers’ Holiday Concert in December.
Auditions will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Desert Foothills Lutheran Church, 28305 N. Scottsdale Road (on the east side of the street between Dynamite and Jomax).
Students auditioning are expected to sing from memory one or two songs of their choice with piano or CD accompaniment. An accompanist and CD player will be provided.
Selections need not be classical in nature, but should show the singer’s range and voice quality. No microphones are allowed.
Students need not be currently studying with a private instructor, but should have a desire to do so. Winners will be notified by e-mail and/or mail.
The Upscale Singers are a 501(C)-3 non-profit organization. Every year the singers present a holiday concert and a spring musical revue with the Upscale Kids. The concerts are regularly sold out.
Under the direction of Margaret Watson, the group is committed to sharing the joy of music, and passing that joy along to the younger generation. This is the third year the Upscale Singers have offered vocal scholarships, and the first time that the area has been expanded to include students not only from the Cave Creek Unified School District, but also from the Anthem/New River area.
Please call 480-488-6359 by Sept. 11 to set up an audition appointment.
