PVCC Black Mountain looking for local teachers

DESERT FOOTHILLS – Paradise Valley Community College is putting out the call for “enthusiastic and qualified” instructors from the area for the new satellite campus it will share with a new YMCA and Foothills Community Foundation at the new Black Mountain campus.

The new Black Mountain campus is on 60th Street just south of the Carefree Highway.
Classes will begin near the end of August or in early September. A grand opening for the Y should take place in early October.
Bob Duke, acting director of continuing education at PVCC, said PVCC hopes to hire teachers locally to further the area’s focus on the arts.

“We prefer to have our noncredit instructors come from Carefree and Cave Creek, an area that is known for its artistic and active residents,” he said.

The Continuing Education department is presently looking for instructors, or course proposals, in the areas of bridge, personal enrichment, xeriscape landscaping and arts and crafts.

Among noncredit classes being considered for the fall session are: Art, Bird Watching, Conversational Spanish and Italian, Digital Photography and PC Basics.

PVCC Black Mountain class schedules will be available early this summer at both the Desert Broom and Desert Foothills Libraries. Class schedules are also available online by visiting www.paradisevalley.edu/ce.

Local photographer and Cave Creek resident, Jerry Sieve, is a prime example of the types of teachers being sought at PVCC Black Mountain. He will be teaching a Basic Digital Photography class on Tuesdays and Thursdays this fall. The course is open to photographers of all types and skill levels.

Although the class he teaches at the PVCC main campus is almost full, Sieve is concerned that many people may be unaware of the Black Mountain campus classes, which still have plenty of space available.

“It could work out well,” he said about the class being offered locally. “Many people want to learn about digital photography. It could fit in well in the community.”
