SCOTTSDALE – FCF-HCC celebrates over 20 years providing a Visual Arts Program and has invited local experts, educators and artists to present topics for our 2017 Visual Arts Exploration Series from Architecture to Selfies. Celebrate the world of visual art by attending one of the presentations each Monday afternoon January through February at the FCF-Holland Community Center, 34250 N 60th Street, Building B, Scottsdale AZ 85266. Complimentary wine and cheese will be served at 3:30 p.m. with each presentation beginning at 4:00 p.m. The 45-minute presentations are followed by a question and answer period. January 9, Permanent and Temporary Public Art in Scottsdale
Donna will present an overview of Scottsdale Public Art, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2015, and will highlight the permanent public art in the City’s collection, placing special emphasis on those projects in North Scottsdale Presented by Donna Isaac, Director, Scottsdale Public Art and Vice President, Scottsdale Cultural Council.
January 16, Murals for Social Change
Hugo will touch on the history of mural art, its influences through history, and how it impacts us. The world is becoming a mecca for murals and community projects that tell stories and change lives. Murals are a visual way of telling stories and are a form of communication as old as humankind. From the first cave painting to the newest Banksy, artists are telling a story. History recorded as it happened. “Murals for social change” will touch on the history of mural art, its influences through history, and how it impacts us. The presentation will end with examples of some of Hugo Medina’s murals. Presented by Hugo Medina, Mural Artist and Phoenix College Adjunct Faculty.
January 23, A Life of Art and Travel
Roberta will weave her personal life experiences of sketching on location in Europe while visiting the most renown Art Museums around the world and standing in front of the paintings and original sketches of art history’s most noted artists from the Renaissance to the late 1800’s. A showcase of ‘state of the art’ supplies needed for and a first-hand demonstration of travel sketching. Presented by Roberta Kritzia, Artist and Educator. This lecture coincides with her one-woman show in the Holland Alley Gallery.
January 30, Original Selfies—The Extraordinary Self-Portraits of the World’s Great Artists
Suzie will present the portraits of SELF, as seen through the painter’s own eye. A self-portrait often reveals interesting, unexpected points of view and personal insights into details and facts otherwise unknown. Presented by Suzie Wilson, Artist. This lecture coincides with her one-woman show in the Holland Alley Gallery.
February 6, David Hockney—The Bigger Picture
David Hockney is an English painter, draughtsman, printmaker, stage designer and photographer. An important contributor to the Pop art movement of the 1960s, he is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. Maureen will present on David Hockney by following the career of the most celebrated British artist of the 20th century. Presented by Maureen Chestnut, Art Educator and Phoenix Art Museum Docent
February 13, The Theater of Salvador Dali (1904-1989)
A look at some of Dali’s (1904-1989) famous works, who and what influenced his art, and where he drew his ideas and inspiration. Presented by Peggy Strubel, Docent at Phoenix Art Museum
February 20, Moving Wright On
The fascinating and revered style and influence of Frank Lloyd Wright is in the Valley and across the United States. Aaron will present Frank Lloyd Wright’s work in the context of his legacy in buildings and thought, and in particular of his work at Taliesin and Taliesin West.
