In a few months, dozens of lawmakers will be leaving Congress.
Many are retiring, and some have lost their seat in elections. Quite a few will be taking up jobs as lobbyists for special interests before long.
But before they do, they will try to rush a giant spending bill through Congress during this ‘lame duck’ session so they can sneak in some goodies for their friends.
A ‘lame duck’ session of Congress – after the new lawmakers are elected but while the old lawmakers are still in office – is no time to commit to important tax-and-spend policies. The idea of lawmakers who are on their way out, and no longer feel accountable to the people, getting together and increasing spending should send chills up every taxpayer’s spine.
We’ve seen this movie before: Lawmakers will say they need to pass a massive spending bill to avoid a crisis. They will say they need to pass it NOW, before anyone has time to read it. But they WON’T tell you all the ways they’re giving out corporate welfare – or just plain overspending – at your expense.
Tell your lawmakers that the lame duck is the wrong time to pass a giant, long-term spending bill, and to just pass a bill that gets us into next year. Let’ wait until we have an accountable to make important spending decisions.
