The Town of Carefree is holding “traffic calming” discussions. We all moved here for VARIOUS reasons—golf courses, mountains, spacious lots, condo living near the center of town, sidewalks, horse trails, walking paths, parks, controlled or wild vegetation. We all want what WE want.
Take an aerial view in your mind of our 8.8 sq. miles looking down from the center of town. Residents on the “west side of Black Mountain” want to maintain their beautiful views with less densely packed housing and traffic; the “central crowd” off Tom Darlington and Cave Creek Rd are fearful of being mowed down while trying to walk across the road by residents and tourists who think 30 mph means 40+ mph; the “east side” wants no more housing and more walking trails and parks; there’s vegetation overgrowth sight problems; the “south side” Boulders deals with thru-traffic on the narrow and winding peripheral Bloody Basin Way; and residents on the “southwest side of Tom Darlington” want to deter and slow down traffic.
Unfortunately, the Town coffers only have so much money for prioritizing—safety, road maintenance and traffic control. How best to prioritize? Usually, those screaming the loudest get appeased.
