From 1942-45, while most American children were busy playing ball or riding bikes, Ike Feiges was bravely trying to stay alive in Auschwitz-Birkanow, the concentration camp in Poland synonymous with death. His nightmare began in Czenowitzh, Romania with a “knock on the door,” after which the 8-year-old Feiges was taken on a freight train with his father, mother and two sisters to Auschwitz.
During his imprisonment, Feiges was separated from his family, and at one point hidden in the barracks under floorboards by a family friend. When Russia liberated the camp in 1945, he reunited with members of his family, and in 1951 settled in Baltimore, Md. He went on to work for the U.S. government as an electrical engineer.
Mr. Feiges and his wife Nancy will be lighting the menorah during Chanukah in Carefree on Monday, Dec. 23 at 5:30 p.m., and will share recollections of his history. This event is free to attend, and is open to attendees of all denominations and faiths.
