Welcome to Spring and weed season! Most of you are either pulling by hand, or spraying with herbicide. The most popular herbicide is Roundup. I strongly recommend you find a safe alternative, as there are be reversible dangers to this product and making the healthy decision not to use it will help our health and our environment.
Round up and Rodeo are two of Monsanto’s largest selling herbicides. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in these products. They claim it as harmless as table salt, which is one of the most corrosive substances on the planet. Glyphosate works by not allowing the treated plant to form amino acids necessary for protein synthesis. Because the plant absorbs this, it cannot be removed by washing or peeling produce or milling, baking, were really grains. Studies show the chemical to persist in food for up to two years! One study showed that it has killed 50% of three species of beneficial insects, a parasitoid wasp, a lacewing, and a ladybug.
When Monsanto refers to their number one weed killer, they say that the active ingredient does this or that. They make no mention of the entire product. They’re quick to leave out discussion on the inert ingredients that are more toxic than the active ingredient, glyphosate. All pesticides are a general mix of chemicals. Solvents, surfactants, and emulsifiers. Federal law classifies these inert ingredients as trade secrets, and does not require the manufacturers to list them on the label. Inert can make up to as much as 99% of a pesticide formulation! According to the American Cancer Society’s previous articles starting in 1999 to present, people exposed to glyphosate are 2.7 times more likely to contract non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. You probably heard of the huge lawsuit against Monsanto for a worker having to use Roundup. These lawsuits are finally coming to light, and hopefully showing the general population just how dangerous these products are. Some symptoms include swollen eyes, face, joints, itching skin, rapid heart rate, elevated blood pressure, chest pains, congestion, coughing, headache, and nausea. Think about this for a second. During weed season, is it really allergies that are causing your symptoms? It could be because so many are using these products, you’re breathing them from the air around us.
