Maricopa County Animal Care & Control (MCACC) shelters are overcapacity and the agency is asking the public for help. As the Valley’s only open intake shelter, MCACC does not turn away any dog or cat. In the past five days, MCACC shelters have received 580 stray or unwanted pets. MCACC’s staff is currently caring for 817 animals between their Mesa and Phoenix locations.
Many of the animals that come to MCACC are strays that enter the shelter with no form of identification making it virtually impossible for staff to alert the pet owner. As MCACC strives to continue reducing euthanasia, the agency is dealing with crowded kennels filled with dogs and cats awaiting homes.
Unfortunately, the busiest time of the year is still ahead with the coming of the July 4th holiday and an onslaught of lost pets resulting from fireworks festivities.
MCACC is asking the public to help in any way possible and has come up with a quick and easy way for citizens to SAVE animals during this time of year:
SEARCH for your lost pet(s) at both MCACC shelters.
ADOPT or foster an animal from MCACC.
VERIFY that your pet(s) at home is wearing current ID at all times.
EDUCATE family, friends and co-workers about pet homelessness and how they can help.
