SCOTTSDALE — See what crocodiles and other reptiles do as daytime turns to night!
The Phoenix Herpetological Society (PHS) is holding a “Twilight Croc Walk” on Friday, June 30, from 6 to 9 p.m.
Get your kids away from the TV and video games, and let them experience nature at night with some of the world’s most exotic creatures. As part of the Twilight Croc Walk, visitors to PHS will:
· Have dinner
· Observe the crocodiles and alligators feed
· Learn about nocturnal reptiles
· Find crocs and gators in their enclosures after dark, using a flashlight to see their reflective eyeshine
As a special feature, PHS will have one of its rescued alligators out for display with a researcher performing physical therapy to help with the gator’s rehabilitation.
PHS has the second-largest collection of crocodilians in the United States. Visitors to the nationally recognized sanctuary can see 21 of the world’s 24 species of crocodilians, which include crocodiles, alligators and caimans.
Admission to the event is $25 for adults and kids ages 4 and up, which includes access to all demonstrations and reptile feedings, wristband and dinner (hamburger, hot dog or veggie burger plus chips and a drink). Children ages 3 and younger are admitted free (a meal ticket can be purchased for $5 at the door).
Kids will get a head lamp to take home, while adults will get a commemorative can koozie.
There will be multiple feeding demonstrations so people have opportunities to participate in all activities. Planned Itinerary Includes:
6:00 – 6:30 pm: Dinnertime (Grill will close at 6:30 pm)
6:30 – 8:30 pm: Petting Zoo/Interactions in the Classroom
6:45 pm: Croc Feeding Demonstration
7:15 pm: Croc Feeding Demonstration
7:45 pm: Croc Feeding Demonstration
8:15 – 9:00 pm: Time to count the crocs using flashlights & headlamps
9:00 pm: Time to go home
The exact animals that PHS will feed will be determined the day of the event, but you can definitely plan on seeing at least one American Alligator and a couple of different types of crocodiles eat.
People must pre-register at www.phoenixherp.com. Space is limited to ensure a high-quality experience. PHS is located in north Scottsdale, near 76th Street and Dynamite Road. Registrants will be given directions to the sanctuary.
