Fire update: Focus shifts from suppression to repair

fire

Cause: Lightning

Original Location: 6 miles south of Globe, Arizona

Containment: 70%

Fuels: Upper elevation: Ponderosa pine, mixed conifer, and sub-alpine fir.

Lower elevation: Brush

Total personnel: 610

Although containing the current perimeter of the fire is still the main goal, the focus has shifted from burning operations to holding and repairing the established line. Rehabilitation of firelines includes chipping, mastication, and dozer line repair along with mop-up of hotspots in areas that could threaten the fire perimeter.

The potential for thunderstorms continues. Storms brought some rain but very little reached the fire area. The storms also brought lots of lightning to the entire Globe area. Thunderstorms may again materialize and could produce gusty, erratic winds with the potential for locally severe weather. Dry lightning is once again possible in the area.

The National Weather Service Phoenix Forecast Office is the best source of weather information in the area. Their updates are available on the National Weather Service website, the Twitter account, and Facebook page.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office has lifted the precautionary pre-evacuation notification for residents in Icehouse and Kellner Canyons, south of the Icehouse/Kellner junction. There are no evacuations in effect due to the Pinal Fire.

Road closures remain in effect around the perimeter of the fire. Please avoid unnecessary travel in the Icehouse and Kellner canyon areas to limit fire traffic in this area so firefighters have access to work safely.

No additional community meetings are planned at this time. Recordings of previous meetings can be viewed on the Tonto National Forest Facebook page. You do not need to have a Facebook account to view these meetings.

Area and road closures and fire restrictions remain in effect. The Tonto National Forest Pinal Fire Closure and Fire Restrictions information are available on the Tonto National Forest webpage.

Wildfires are a No Drone Zone. If you fly, we can’t. Every time a drone is spotted anywhere within the Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) area, all aircraft must land until we can be sure the drone is clear of this area. Visit the National Interagency Fire Center webpage for more information.
