Does your skillset enable you to avoid the necessity of using your firearm?
I’ve extensively covered firearm training methods due to my experience and the situations I have encountered while armed.
Confidence in your firearm or self-defense skills reduces the likelihood of needing to use your firearm. Let me explain further.Untrained firearm owners often resort to using their guns in heated situations, relying on them for safety. Many own firearms for self-defense but lack the necessary training to use them efficiently.
Owning a firearm does not automatically make you safer. A gun is just a tool, and without proper skills and training, it can be more dangerous than protective.
Learning self-defense shooting promotes calmness in tense situations. You rely on your knowledge, skills, and firearm—always prioritizing the gun last.
Being a responsible firearm owner involves more than just buying a gun. As you gain knowledge and skill, you will become more confident and less likely to be a victim, not because you can draw faster but because you think differently during confrontations.
Untrained individuals rarely feel confident in dangerous situations just because they have a firearm. Conversely, well-trained armed people manage similar incidents with confidence and calm. Your skill level is crucial.
In my Defensive Pistol course, I emphasize decision-making in self-defense scenarios. Your actions can save your life or lead to imprisonment. They can eliminate the threat or harm an innocent person. Using deadly force to protect others is allowed in Arizona, but it can also put you in situations beyond your skill level.
Your actions stem from your thoughts. Effective thinking involves knowing why, when, and how before acting. Practice makes your actions faster and more efficient. The key is your thought process: how you interpret the scenario and determine your next steps.
When we encounter something that we have previously considered extensively or experienced before, our brains are not subjected to temporary shock. The familiarity allows us to respond promptly and appropriately.
Defensive shooting involves not only neutralizing the threat but also protecting oneself. Will I be quicker and smarter than my attacker? I hope so, but there is no guarantee. Besides using deadly force, what can I do to ensure my safety? On the range, we practice techniques to protect the good guy.
Shooting accurately is crucial, but moving while shooting makes me a tougher target, and kneeling reduces the area the bad guy can hit.
Some of these actions may occur instinctively during dangerous situations. The human mind is designed to protect itself, which may lead to natural reactions such as kneeling, moving, or fleeing from danger. However, performing these actions while operating a firearm requires training and practice.
My students improve their firearm handling and decision-making skills consistently. I challenge intermediate to advanced students by critically evaluating their weapon handling, marksmanship, decision making, and tactical mindset. Additionally, I evaluate their actions in accordance with local laws.
This process is not only essential for developing proficiency in shooting but also crucial for forming a responsible firearm owner. It helps create an individual with the appropriate mindset to carry a firearm for self-defense and the protection of others.
Achieving an intermediate to advanced level in firearms instruction varies by individual. Typically, students can reach this level within a year with regular training. Some students may achieve expert-level proficiency in 2-3 years.
Several students have progressed from their first time handling a firearm six months ago to an intermediate level. This group includes both men and women who have taken their protection seriously and improved significantly.
I would like to say thank you to those students, you know who you are. Not only for choosing Johnson Group tactical, but for your commitment to training and to your safety and the safety of those you love.
What is holding you back? How you train is crucial. Do not own a firearm for self-defense without proper training. Create security in your life through preparation.
