It’s more than looks. Here are some hidden consequences from being overweight that your doctor may not tell you

Dr Leisa

We all know that we look great when we’re in better shape. We feel and look younger, have a lot more energy, and play better sports.

There are still many things that are going on in our body when we are overweight, even if it’s just a few pounds over our optimum. Many of the obvious effects, like joint pain or high blood pressure are widely known, but there are other less visible impacts on health that may go unnoticed or unaddressed.

First, I’d like to share a shocking fact. For every pound of fat you gain, the body makes about seven miles of new blood vessels!

Your heart must pump even harder for every additional pound of fat you gain. This places quite a bit of burden on your heart as a result. Just think about your heart pumping from the Cave Creek Road exit and the 101 to the Desert Ridge exit and back. That’s a long way for your heart to pump.

Neuropathy

Many people who suffer from neuropathy are overweight or have a higher body fat percentage. Of course, the patient may be diabetic, have had chemotherapy, or other neurological conditions. However, now there are studies showing that increased body fat percentage can cause neuropathy. When you lose weight, your body breaks down the unneeded blood vessels I mentioned above. Improving the health of your blood vessels can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. These two alone are responsible for so many serious diseases.

Hormonal Imbalances

Weight gain, especially when associated with abdominal fat, can disrupt the balance of hormones like insulin, estrogen, and cortisol. These imbalances can contribute to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), insulin resistance, and thyroid issues.

Impaired Immune Function

Being overweight can affect the immune system by increasing inflammation in the body. Chronic low-grade inflammation associated with weight gain can decrease immune function, making you more susceptible to infections, autoimmune diseases, and even certain cancers. This is very important today.

Altered Gut Microbiome

Weight gain, especially if it leads to obesity, can alter the gut microbiome, the collection of bacteria and microbes in the digestive system. This imbalance can affect digestion, immunity, and even mental health, leading to issues like bloating, mood swings, or increased inflammation.

Metabolic Syndrome

Many conditions include high blood pressure, high blood sugar, abnormal cholesterol levels, and increased abdominal fat. Metabolic syndrome is often linked to weight gain and increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. However, it may be undiagnosed for years as the symptoms are subtle and gradual. Finding a weight loss program that does not involve Semaglutide that has serious long term side effects that contribute to some irreversible diseases, is important to take the weight off effectively and keep it off.

Losing and gaining like a yo-yo can also cause irreversible damage to the body. We can help with weight loss without these dangerous side effects.

Increased Risk of Certain Cancers

Obesity is linked to an increased risk of certain types of cancer, including breast, colon, liver, and kidney cancers. Fat tissue produces hormones and growth factors that may encourage cancer cells to grow, and excess weight can also impair the body’s ability to detoxify and repair DNA. Many primary care physicians refer to oncologists, without addressing the patient’s body fat content. Teaching the patient how to reduce body fat and increase healthy lean muscle mass is necessary to increase the patient’s odds for their recovery from and in many cases, the prevention of these cancers.
