My Candidacy for Carefree Town Council

Dear Carefree Residents:

My name is Nakisa Azizi and I am honored to share that I am on the ballot for Carefree Town Council this July.

An Arizona native, I became concerned about the future of Carefree shortly after moving here with my husband in early 2023. Like many Carefree residents, I was drawn to the natural beauty that surrounds our Town and was distressed to learn that some of our last remaining open space was under threat of commercial development. Adding insult to injury was the ill-fated attempt by Town officials to impose a new property tax, which we opposed along with the overwhelming majority of eligible voters. Since that time, I have appeared at numerous meetings of both the Town Council and Planning and Zoning Committee to express my opposition to the special planning area (SPA) designation on the northwest corner of Tom Darlington and Carefree Highway. I have also publicly advocated for the Carefree Park initiative. If elected to the Town Council, I will work steadfastly to protect our community’s semi-rural charm and the Sonoran Desert we are so blessed to call home. In addition to preserving open space, I will resist attempts to further deploy 5G transmitters in our community, which not only tarnish our Town’s natural aesthetic, but also emit poorly regulated forms of wireless radiation that pose undetermined health risks to residents and wildlife, alike.

Apart from prioritizing environmental stewardship, as a Town councilmember, I will seek creative ways to generate tourism that enhances rather than diminishes the quality of life for our residents. For example, I have proposed the establishment of a destination, farm-to-table restaurant featuring local produce and chef-inspired dishes capable of attracting visitors from across the Valley. I have also proposed the founding of a co-op or similar initiative in the Town Center to increase both residents’ and visitors’ access to organic, local produce and artisan goods typically only available at the weekly farmer’s market. This storefront could also serve as a pick-up location for farm boxes by members of local CSAs, further boosting Earth-friendly tourism in our Town. Finally, I believe our community is only as resilient as it is self-reliant, which is why I have coordinated with Town administration to support our local food systems by adding composting services to Carefree’s official utilities webpage.

Sincerely,

Nakisa Azizi, JD
