The breathtaking Town of Carefree, nestled in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, is delighted to announce 2024 as its 40th anniversary since incorporation. This milestone marks not only four decades of community growth, development, and change but it’s also a time to reflect and celebrate the Town’s deep-rooted history dating back to the 1950’s.
In 1955, a 400-acre goat farm north of Scottsdale was discovered, and the 2,200 surrounding acres were secured by the Town founders K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington for $44,000. They came together to create a joint business venture named the Carefree Development Corp., and the name “Carefree” was regularly used to describe their vision of the Town they proposed. In 1958, the Darlington-Palmer building was finished in the downtown area (that building is now Town Hall).
Four years later in 1959, the iconic K.T. Palmer Sundial was designed and built, becoming a symbol of the Town’s commitment to embracing timelessness and natural beauty. This was the beginning of the foundation for what would become a flourishing community filled with history.
To honor the Town of Carefree’s remarkable journey, a historical installation titled “Walk Through Time” is set to grace the Carefree Desert Gardens in early to mid-March. This immersive experience will guide residents and visitors alike through the Town’s extensive timeline, showcasing pivotal moments from its inception to the present day. Wander through the Town and explore key historical spots that have played a significant role in shaping Carefree’s unique identity.
“Walk Through Time” promises to be a captivating journey, offering insights into the origins of the town, its architectural marvels, and the notable personalities who have graced its streets.
As the seasons change, the major anniversary festivities will begin in the fall, with the Town of Carefree and local businesses collaborating to host a series of exciting events. These celebrations aim to bring the community together, fostering a sense of unity and pride in the Town’s accomplishments over the past 40 years and what will be accomplished in the future.
