I’ve been writing quite a bit about various skillsets and mindsets that can be learned through training to provide you with an increased level of security and protection. These skills require not only hands on training but also a renewed mentality which includes situational awareness, knowing your limits, understanding your will to survive, and controlling your actions based on the scenario you are faced with.
I’ve touched on the training necessary in making firearms techniques and drills second nature so when needed these actions become automatic; saving time and possibly saving your life. I’ve spoken in depth about the three categories in which most people fall into during times of extreme danger: Victim, Defender, and Hunter.
All of these categories listed above are particularly important to survival and need to be studied, trained, and then trained repeatedly again. But today I’d like to touch on what I consider as my Ultimate Protection. I feel I’d be remiss in not discussing what I truly believe is my Ultimate Protection. When I think about the events I have faced in my life involving life threatening situations and acts of self-defense I will always debrief the events. What that mean is that myself and those involved review all details of the event and we constructively study what we could have done differently and what we did well. Every incident can be a learning experience and hopefully they can be an affirmation of things done that worked to our advantage. Immediately after an incident I rarely acknowledge the true reason why I believe I survived that event.
If you read my articles on a regular basis, or any other persons for that matter, I think it is important to understand a little about the author to understand where the foundations of their teaching or opinions are coming from.
I have shared that I served proudly in the U.S. Military for 10 years including a Combat deployment. I’m a 20-year retired Law Enforcement Officer including 7 years on a local SWAT Team to include serving as a SWAT Team Leader. I’ve taken numerous hours of firearms and tactical training given by some of the best instructors in the field.
All of these things are very important and assist not only in my survival. However, I have come to realize that my faith in God & my reliance on His protection through these incidents has been my true reason of survival.
I give gratitude to God for my survival during these critical incidents and for His guidance during those difficult times. He is truly the foundation to everything I do.
Now please don’t misunderstand my faith in God’s protection as a free pass to go recklessly into dangerous waters with no regard for my safety because God’s got me. No, it is not a pass to be reckless with my life. God promises in His word that He will protect me. This does not guarantee that I will never know pain or loss. The story of Job shows me that although God is able to deliver me out of every physical calamity or trouble, it may not be His will to do so. “Protecting us from all trials is not always beneficial to us.” James 1:2-3.
My passion is to share my knowledge and the foundation of my survival and willingness to survive in my Firearms Classes so others can survive and protect themselves and the ones they love as well.
During my years in the military and law enforcement I’ve always leaned on a particular scripture, so much that I had it tattooed on my left forearm. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13. That verse is not telling me to go lay down my life for someone else, but it does describe in my opinion, the great Love God has for those that put themselves in life threatening situations for the protection of others. I do not want to die, nor do I want to stand idle and watch another die at the hands of evil.
