Take care of yourself to help prevent the latest coronavirus and more

Dr Leisa

It seems we can’t go anywhere today and not here about the coronavirus. The media has so many people in fear that they really don’t know what to do. Like other virus epidemics in the past, the media has frightened people to follow blindly, and not think for themselves. In this article, I hope to help to empower each of you to make conscious decisions on how you are going to take care of yourself and build your immune system to fight off these viruses.

First of all, let’s talk about fact not fear. At the time this article was written, according to the World Health Organization, the coronavirus has spread to 18 countries. China has reported more than 7,700 cases of the disease and 170 deaths. So far, there have been no deaths from the disease outside of China. All but seven coronavirus cases outside China have been detected in patients who recently traveled to Wuhan. At this time, 99% of the coronavirus cases have been in China, and the disease has a 2% death rate as of Thursday. The number of cases has surpassed the cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) that were reported during an outbreak in 2002 and 2003.

Wearing a mask will help to prevent you from spreading the virus to others. It will stop the saliva spray into the air, and on surfaces. A simple paper mask will not help you from contacting the virus from others, as it will not prevent you from touching surfaces that have the virus on them. Touching surfaces, then touching your mouth, eyes, or nose may cause you to contract the virus. In rare cases, it may be spread through fecal matter.

What can I do to sanitize my hands and surfaces in my home and work space?

Over-the-counter sanitizers may not work to protect you. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a warning letter to hand sanitizer manufacturer Purell telling the company to amend unsubstantiated statements about the ability of new hand sanitizer products to reduce transmission of diseases like Ebola, norovirus and influenza. Mass marketing has caused an outbreak of fear in the community. These products do not work for viruses. As a matter of fact, the alcohol in them can ruin your first line of defense, therefore making you more susceptible to catching disease.

Products with the correct type of colloidal silver and carrier will help. Silver vessels were used by ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and Phoenicians to preserve drinking water. The father of medicine, Hippocrates, first described silver’s antimicrobial benefits, writing about its healing and anti-disease properties. These products can be found in nasal spray, hand sanitizer, and liquid to apply into nebulizers for breathing. I offer these products to my patients regularly. This is absolutely necessary to allow your body to protect itself from pathogens like viruses.

Eating the right foods is also necessary to fight viruses. Making your own, eating hot foods and vegetables is important. Yes chicken soup is Jewish penicillin! Just be sure it’s homemade, not store-bought or purchased at a deli or restaurant that is using preservatives and other additives. Fresh ginger, and ginger tea is a Traditional Chinese Medicine method of heating the body to fight off infection. Monitor your intake of sugar. Sugar will lower your immune system. Eating sweet treats feels good at the time, but it’s doing damage. Limit or eliminate sugar at this time.

Let’s hope this takes out some of the fear and helps to arm yourself by raising our immune system on it’s own.
