FAIRFAX, Va. – Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement in response to reports that the White House is considering military options in Syria without any authorization to use force being adopted by Congress:
“Any military action by President Obama in Syria must have the approval of Congress under Article One of the Constitution. Failure of President Obama to seek such approval puts into question his fitness to lead. In 2013, Obama sought and Congress explicitly did not vote to authorize force in Syria.
“If Obama wants a war with Russia so badly, he should call Congress into special session to make his case and to vote on it. If he proceeds with any military options against Russian and Syrian targets without Congressional assent, the consequences could be too dire for any of us to contemplate. It is incumbent on House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader McConnell to immediately state publicly their opposition to any military action in Syria without an affirmative vote of Congress, as the Constitution requires.”
