WASHINGTON, DC – With the 2016 Presidential Election less than a month away, the Association of Mature American Citizens is calling on the candidates to start focusing on issues that mean the most to seniors, Obamacare and Social Security.
“A lot has been said about the growing importance of Millennials as voters, but older Americans are still one of the most important voting blocs. Yet neither Hillary Clinton nor Donald Trump has taken time off from bickering with each other to address issues such as Obamacare and Social Security,” says Dan Weber, president of the Association of Mature American Citizens.
Obamacare is of particular concern to seniors since it is on the brink of falling apart as evidenced by the negative news coverage that the Affordable Care Act has been receiving lately, he notes. Sky-rocketing premiums, the collapse of exchanges and the increasing number of insurers that are opting out of the ACA have dominated the headlines across the country lately. In addition, there is word now that taxpayers will be on the hook for what Weber calls “Obamacare’s death spiral”
A recent Washington Post story revealed that “the Obama administration is maneuvering to pay health insurers billions of dollars the government owes under the Affordable Care Act, through a move that could circumvent Congress and help shore up the president’s signature legislative achievement before he leaves office.”
As for Social Security, measures need to be taken to ensure its continued viability, according to Weber. “We’ve proposed a plan that lawmakers seem to like. It involves what we call a Social Security Guarantee, a simple three-part reform that includes fair and balanced age setbacks for future recipients, guaranteed minimum cost of living increases and a provision for a new personal Early Retirement Account (ERA).”
We recognize the importance of homeland security, the economy and the other topics they are addressing. But healthcare and how we are going to pay for it and our retirement funding, an annuity we’ve paid for all our working lives, are crucial components of our country’s future. Surely, the candidates can take the time to tell us that these issues are important to them and how they propose to deal with Obamacare’s failures and the growing potential for a Social Security crisis.”
