The Sudler Award-winning Scottsdale Concert Band opens its 39th season at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, October 9, with a free concert titled “Curtain Up!” at Chaparral High School Auditorium, 6935 E. Gold Dust Ave., Scottsdale.
Euphonium soloist Brian C. Wilson will perform “Estrellita” (My Little Star), by Mexican composer Manuel A. Ponce with the band, and the concert will include show tunes such as “Gypsy Dance” from “Carmen,” Henry Mancini’s “It Had Better Be You,” and “Grand Canyon Fanfare” by James Newton Howard.
Wilson is an active and highly sought-after clinician and euphonium soloist. Among the most elite euphonium players on the West Coast, he currently performs as solo euphonium in the Salt River Brass, conducted by Patrick Sheridan.
Wilson also has toured as a soloist throughout Europe with the Arizona Ambassadors of Music, and has performed and recorded with Summit Brass. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Arizona State University.
The Scottsdale Concert Band, a 75-member community ensemble, is sponsored by Scottsdale Community College and performs four concerts per year.
The Sudler Silver Scroll is presented by the John Philip Sousa Foundation and is the most prestigious award available to a community concert band.
