PHOENIX – A dusty cowpoke tips his hat to two Victorian ladies on a front porch as he moseys through the Village on his way to the Tonsorial for a shave and a bath. The town Marshal entertains visitors with stories of dangerous desperados and justice in the old west. Gunshots ring out as the Sheriff and his posse hunt down the dastardly varmints who just robbed the bank while children pan for gold. In the background, the blacksmith’s hammer sings a clanging melody.
It’s a normal day at Pioneer Arizona Living History Museum. This interactive museum, with its dedicated volunteer corps of costumed re-enactors, presents Arizona life as it would have been from 1863 to 1912. History overtakes you as you are greeted in the streets by colorful townsfolk, relax in the Village Green, or stroll through the original or authentically reproduced buildings.
Pioneer Village is auditioning volunteers to help introduce thousands of school children, teachers, and visitors from around the world to Arizona history in this unique desert place where time stands still.
Casting Calls will be held on Saturday, September 10, PROMPTLY at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Each applicant will receive an overview of the operations of the Village, meet with current volunteers, learn about costumes, and audition with the Volunteer Coordinator or one of his assistants. Those accepted will receive training that day.
Needed are Townspeople (individuals and families) to greet visitors, answer questions, and demonstrate pioneer crafts, occupations, and games; School Greeters; Actors for skits around the village; Building Docents; Tour Guides; Trolley Drivers; and Gold Panning Instructors.
Arizona Territorial history buffs, teachers, story tellers, theater students or those who practice a pioneer trade are encouraged to attend. For those with a passion for the Old West but have not had the opportunity to live it – training is provided.
All areas are wheelchair accessible.
Pre-registration for auditions is required. Email your name and contact information to [email protected] by August 31.
