Scottsdale Fire Dept. offers Ride for Toys on December 5

Scottsdale Fire Department proudly announces the 11th annual “Ride for Toys” event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Target store, 15444 N. Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd.

During this special charity event, each child who donates a new, unwrapped toy will be given a free ride on a Scottsdale Fire engine. Caregivers also have the opportunity to have their child seat checked by a certified technician at the event. Scottsdale firefighters will present the donated toys to the Paiute Neighborhood Center, a south Scottsdale community center that assists underprivileged children and teens at the conclusion of the event.

Oh What Love live tour

The Good Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church is hosting the Watoto Choir from Uganda, East Africa on December 13 performing for their concert Oh What Love. Since 1994, Watoto children’s choirs have travelled the world expressing the plight of Africa’s orphaned children and vulnerable women. The children are orphans suffering the loss of parent(s) to war or AIDS and rescued currently living in the Watoto church and village in Kampala, Uganda. The appeal is saving children to ultimately help transform their nation. Watoto means children in the Swahili language.

Prep your fireplace before sparking up the logs

There’s finally a chill in the air. The holidays have arrived and thoughts of firing up the logs in the fireplace are tempting. However, fireplaces and chimneys are involved in 42 percent of all home heating fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

“Every season we are called to assist residents who need help with an issue caused by their fireplace,” says Scottsdale Fire Deputy Chief Jim Ford.
