Gresco Ranked #1 in High School Golf

J. J. Gresco, of North Scottsdale, is ranked as the #1 high school golfer in Arizona for the second straight year by the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA). Gresco is a junior at Notre Dame Prep (NDP). It is one thing to be the #1-ranked high school golfer in the state once, but to do it twice is remarkable. Yet, that is just what the NDP junior accomplished this year and last.

The 16 year-old Gresco has been playing golf since he has been old enough to hold a club. He has sacrificed free time and weekends traveling to tournaments to improve his game. "I play in a lot tournaments because you get better by playing," he said. "The more tournaments I play in, the more confident I become."

Gresco will be the lone Saint competing in the state tournament this year. NDP was moved up to AIA Division I this year, and that presented quite a challenge for the young team. The top 15 individuals and the top 15 teams get to participate in the state tournament. Although Gresco is the state's top-ranked individual player, his NDP team placed 17th in the rankings and narrowly missed the cut. This is the first time in four or five years that NDP is not sending its team to state. However, the team is very young and has no seniors, so next year should be a strong one.
