Arizona veteran elected American Legion National Vice Commander

BALTIMORE – Business Wire –A veteran from Glendale, Ariz. was elected as a National Vice Commander of The American Legion by delegates at the organization’s 97th National Convention in Baltimore today.

George E. Cushing is a member of American Legion Post 29 in Glendale, Ariz. He served in the U.S. Army and Air Force. He retired from the military after 22 years. He has held various offices at every level of The American Legion, including Department (state) Commander of Arizona from 2011-2012. At the national level he served as a member of the Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Commission, National Cemetery Subcommittee and the National Legislative Council.

Cushing retired from Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Division with 25 years of service as a senior field engineer. A graduate of Manchester (CT) High School, he attended Texas A&M College majoring in Education. For his work with veterans and the local communities he was honored by being inducted into the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame in the Class of 2006. He was elected membership director for the western part of the state. In 2007 he was selected as a recipient of the prestigious Hon Kachina Volunteer Award, with over 3000 hours of service on the Honor Guard at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, by their Board of Governors, made up of business and civic leaders.

He was appointed as Commissioner of the Veterans Service Advisory Commission by the governor, and also served as its chairman. He also served as a member of the Military Family Relief Fund Advisory Committee.

He is married to Jeanette (Jan) H. Cushing. They have four grown children, ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren with another on the way.

He will serve a one-year term in the Legion’s second-highest elective office. He took the oath of office along with National Commander Dale Barnett of Douglasville, Ga. Cushing is one of 12 national officers.
