Scottsdale DAR chapter supports community celebrations
Scottsdale-chartered Grand Canyon Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has engaged in civic activities throughout the state to bring focus to the society’s “Celebrate America!” initiative.

Chapter DAR Service for Veterans committee co-chairman, Tracy Justinak, attended Sky Harbor Airport welcome home festivities for Arizona World War II veterans returning from 3-day visits to Washington, D.C. as guests of Honor Flight Arizona. Her most recent involvement was at the May 28 event. Honor Flight Arizona works year-round to plan and conduct 8 to 10 trips to national memorials at no cost to veterans.

Honorary Chapter Regent Katie Paulsen, her 19-month-old son David, and chapter Flag of the United States of America chairman Robbin Parisek played a role in the flag unfurling event at the July 2 Phoenix Mercury vs. Tulsa Shock basketball game held at Talking Stick Arena. The unfurling was arranged by the Arizona Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) who invited members of DAR and the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) to participate. Together the three organizations unfurled a court-sized American flag for the singing of the National Anthem. Katie’s son David is a member of the Hohokam Society C.A.R. and the Barry Goldwater Arizona SAR chapter.

At the request of the office of Scottsdale Mayor W. J. “Jim” Lane, Grand Canyon Chapter was invited to lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the July 2 city council meeting. Members attending included chapter regent, Kathy Shields; Honorary Arizona DAR (ASDAR) and honorary chapter regent, Stephanie Troth; ASDAR vice regent and honorary chapter regent, Terri Mott; and chapter literacy chairman, Diana Ranby. Members were introduced by Mayor Lane, who referred to the chapter’s past community and patriotic services in Scottsdale.

On the Fourth of July, Chapter members who joined the action in the Prescott Frontier Days
Parade at the Courthouse Plaza included Stephanie Troth, Katie Paulsen and associate member Cricket Revell. The celebratory event, held annually, is in its 128th year.
In the last two years, members of local DAR chapters have recorded over 10 million hours of community service. The mission of the society’s “Celebrate America!” committee is to demonstrate the volunteer opportunities associated with DAR and enhance public appreciation for the vibrancy of the organization.

DAR, founded in 1890, is a non-profit, non-political women’s service organization dedicated to patriotic endeavor, historic preservation and better education for children and is open to any woman 18 years or older who can trace her lineal descent to a Revolutionary War patriot.
