zumba logoReasons for Zumba's meteoric rise in popularity? It's fun! It's effective. It's energizing! There's no special equipment or attire (other than comfortable) required. And if you've been fortunate enough to find licensed (since May 2012) Zumba Fitness instructor Patricia Martelly (below), you'll know why her students say "We love her!"

patricia martelly"This is the best workout I have and I do water aerobics, I hike and do yoga. You can work as hard as you want, but it does help if you do it more than once a week," Lynn offered.

First-timer Sheila agreed her experience was great and added Martelly gives you some basic instruction, so between that and watching her, you never feel lost. Another fan who only started last week already lost a pound! The consensus is everyone appreciates how Martelly warms them up, cools them down and boosts the enthusiasm in between!

If unfamiliar, Zumba classes blend exotic rhythms to high-energy Latin and international beats. It definitely burns calories and Martelly, 51, lost 70 pounds with Zumba! On Wednesday morning, try Zumba Toning. Using lightweight, maraca-like Toning Sticks, you can target zones like arms, abs, thighs. There's Zumba Sentao, too! An everyday chair turns into your dance partner to strengthen core and sculpt muscle. Lastly, Zumba Step tones and strengthens legs and glutes. Sign up for one or all, as all fitness levels are welcome! One hour classes are $5. (Martelly also offers a money saving punch card.)

Martelly teaches in two locations: Adaptive Force Performing Arts (AFPA) Dance Studio, 32619 N. Scottsdale Rd. (Summit Shopping Center) Mon-Fri 9:30-10:30 a.m. and Sat. 9-10 a.m. and at Yoga Breeze 4705 E. Carefree Hwy. (Shops at Dove Valley) on Wed. 7-8 p.m. Visit Patriciamartelly.zumba.com or Facebook (ZumbaFitnessWithPatricia). Watch for special Zumba Master Classes when Martelly hosts various fitness instructors "just to give a different vibe," she said. (Cost varies.)
