Cute hands deserve the natural touch at Cuticles

CAVE CREEK – Natural is better. That applies to everything from sustenance to fabrics to cleaning products to nails. Yes, fingernails! Nail technician Patti Lizio figured that out long ago in her then-salon when the harsh chemicals and irritating smells rendered her allergic. So, in June 2009, she opened Cuticles, her own all-natural nail salon. Despite the challenges of starting a business in the midst of a recession, Lizio is thriving. Customers, both women and men, love the fact the salon is cozy with personalized service, and upon walking in, the nostrils aren't assaulted with industrial odors that make your eyes water! Cuticles is bright, soothing and welcoming.

The services are as stellar as the environment. First, don't expect to have your fingers soaked in water. "We're about hydration," Lizio explained. She makes her own oil, called Cuticles, she massages into the nails. Lotion is applied to the hand, then snugly wrapped and warmed. It's a decadent experience.

Some may deem manicures and pedicures for the rich and famous, but consider this. Feet are the foundation of the body. There's a reason it's said if your feet hurt, you hurt all over. If you can't properly tend to your tootsies, a professional pedicure truly should be part of your routine. A plus at Cuticles is that the pedi-tubs are jetless, which equates to being more sanitary.

There's lots of perks at Cuticles, from the one-on-one attention to the fact every client is treated with new-in-package sterilized (by way of autoclave like dentists use) implements. As well, Lizio is concerned with nail health, hence her desire to be acrylic-free, and cautions about all-the-rage Shellac nail polish. It is tempting to opt for color that lasts three weeks, but that polish must be removed with acetone. Not a fingernail-friendly product. "You'll never get 'Shellac'ed' in my salon," Lizio assured.

Check out Cuticles in el Palenque (or at cuticlesaz.com) for yourself, or treat someone to a gift certificate. The salon is open Mon-Sat, appointments preferred, at 6450 E. Cave Creek Rd. Call 480-570-7962 today!

CAVE CREEK – Let's face it, healthy and hydrated skin lifts not only a sagging epidermis but it also boosts confidence. So, it's time men, women and teens alike stop viewing facials as luxuries. Just as one should take his or her choice of skincare products seriously, one should consider a monthly facial a necessary element of the skincare regimen.

No one knows that better than licensed aesthetician JoAnn Julian of J.Julian Fine Skin Care. Not only has she studied various European techniques, Julian researched and carries only those brands she feels offer optimal results. Her favorites? Nelly Devuyst, Mesoestetic (beauty and cosmetic world leader), Ultraceuticals, and Jane Iredale (always 25 percent off).

"What I do is address issues like wrinkles, pigmentation and acne," Julia explained. She has an extensive menu of treatments, ranging from an hour to 90 minutes. A current special is the anti-aging flash facial. It rehydrates the skin and leaves it softer and younger looking.

If unsure what the best treatment for your skin type or problem is, Julian will ask pertinent questions and suggest a facial. "I customize treatments," she said, "and will work with a client, even in regards to budget constraints." With 19 years of experience and some of the most impressive training in the world, clients can be assured Julian can direct them to facials that will greatly benefit each person.

The whole experience is more than simply a routine facial. Each comes with relaxing music, dimmed lights, foot and hand treatments and a gentle shoulder and neck massage. Of course, additional services are available like peels, microdermabrasion, waxing, tinting, even sugar scrub and moisturizer blending parties! It's cost-effective and fun! With Valentine's Day around the corner, why not consider a gift certificate for your loved one?

Check out jjulianfineskincare.com for a listing of services and products. Massage therapist Chris Lee shares spa space with Julian, so make a day of a facial and a massage! For an appointment, call 480-595-1281. J.Julian is located at 6450 E. Cave Creek Rd., Ste. 108.
