Arizona Breast Cancer Specialists opens first radiation oncology practice dedicated solely to treating breast cancer
October 21, 2009
SCOTTSDALE – Arizona Breast Cancer Specialists in Scottsdale is the only radiation-oncology practice in the United States that focuses solely on treating breast cancer.
The newly opened state-of-the-art center employs every known type of radiation technology currently used to treat breast cancer, in addition to giving women access to promising experimental therapies using advanced technologies.
Operated by pioneering radiation oncologists Robert Kuske, M.D. and Coral Quiet, M.D., the $5 million treatment facility is located at 9055 E. Del Camino Dr., Suite 200, Scottsdale.
Physicians at Arizona Breast Cancer Specialists have been recognized for their work with standard external beam radiotherapy. However, the practice has particular expertise in several exciting newer breast cancer technologies:
•Brachytherapy – the highly effective five-day alternative to standard six-week radiation treatments. Developed in the 1990s by Dr. Kuske, it is now the subject of a National Cancer Institute phase III study involving 4,300 patients. Brachytherapy (also called "accelerated partial breast irradiation") targets only cancer cells and avoids exposing healthy tissue to radiation, minimizing complications. Many thousands of women have already been helped by the procedure, which has won international acclaim. The ABCs physicians have more experience in brachytherapy than any other doctors in the world.
•Standard radiation treat-ments can turn scar tissue from prior breast augmentations into painful, rock-hard tissue. Arizona Breast Cancer Specialists uses a targeted radiation technique, unavailable elsewhere, that eliminates the problem.
•Conventional radiation treatments can affect the arteries to the heart's left ventricle. Arizona Breast Cancer Specialists employs techniques that reduce radiation exposure of the left ventricle and its blood supply.
Arizona Breast Cancer Specialists uses technical equipment that is designed to treat only breast cancer patients, delivering both optimal results and optimal comfort.
