Collagen, It’s not just for a pretty face, or is it?

Dr Leisa

So we hear a lot about collagen these days, for everything from aesthetics to joints, and everything in between. How do you know when and where to use collagen, and what types?

First of all, let me explain the types of collagen and how they should be combined or not. Collagen supplements are very popular now. This is because collagen is the major component of connective tissues that make up many body parts, including tendons, ligaments, skin and muscles.

Collagen has many important functions, including providing your skin with structure and strengthening your joints and bones.

What are the benefits of collagen Supplements?
I use the word supplements to describe collagen that is taken internally, not topically in facial products or joint creams. These are the many different ways collagen helps with your body’s scaffolding to build.
-Promote skin elasticity.
-Help support bone & joint health.
-Strengthen hair & nails.
-Support healthy weight management.
-Digestive health.
-Help boost immune function.

I recommend collagen supplements that work and are cost effective. When you call for an exam in my office, I will review collagen powders that work, with no chemicals or nasty additives. I also do not recommend topical collagen, as it is not as effective as taking it internally. We do not sell topical collagen products in my office, only products that may enhance collagen production.

Now let’s talk about the internal benefits of collagen. Plasma, or the product of spinning your blood sample in a centrifuge, can be then injected into your joints, muscle areas or skin, to rejuvenate your collagen growth. This collagen may be in the form of facial collagen or musculoskeletal collagen to regrow and form a scaffolding underneath to support skin, joints, or some muscle tears. This is basically how it works.

With joints, it creates stronger collagen and cartilage to regrow your joint support to help you keep playing the sports you love like golf, tennis, pickleball, hiking, and more. It can regenerate your joints in many cases, and is less invasive and detrimental than surgery or steroid injections.

For hair rejuvenation, it promotes hair growth. It is painless, as numbing cream is used, and the plasma is injected into the scalp. Usually three treatments are rendered. For sexual rejuvenation, the area is numbed, and the plasma is injected. In many cases, only one treatment is needed. This promotes the effective rejuvenation to nerves to increase sensation and function naturally.
