Dr Leisa

Those of you who’ve consulted with me, know I take a history of what you’ve done so far, what’s worked, and what did not. In many cases, the conditions I see are quite serious. Almost every day, I hear patients tell me their other doctor has said that their symptoms are “normal” for their age etc. There is a big difference between what is normal and what is common when it comes to medical symptoms. What I find, is that many doctors will tell a patient to wait until the symptoms are so bad, then return for treatment or surgery. This has happened to me as well. I have no idea why any health practitioner would recommend a patient to wait until a condition worsens to the point of unbearable before returning for the treatment.

Here are some reasons why waiting until a condition is unbearable is not healthy. First of all, the obvious is that many conditions are degenerative, and as the name describes, it will degenerate over time. So why not do something when it’s in the beginning stages than when it is in a crisis phase at the end? Does this make sense? If your auto mechanic said to wait for the noise to get worse, would you stay with the same auto mechanic? I think not.

One condition in question is arthritis. Especially chronic knee pain. So many general practitioners will tell you to wait until the pain becomes unbearable. They tell the patient that the condition is normal for their age. I see patients every day who tell me this. Then they are faced with a treatment plan that includes steroid injections or possible surgery at that point. Do you really want to be the reason a surgeon goes to work every day?

Everyone with insurance tries to buy the policy that is best for their needs. We know here in the US, managed care is a common method of coverage. Managed care is exactly that. It manages your condition, and rarely, if ever resolves it. Correcting or resolving your condition is different. There are less invasive options that can make corrections and give you your life back.

Even internal conditions like weight gain can be ‘put off’ until it is at a level that affects your blood work, and general health. Once again, the healthcare provider may say that your weight gain is “normal” for your age. Once again, it may be common, but not normal. By putting this off, your healthcare professional is doing you a dis-service by not addressing it at the beginning stages. Once it is at a level of diagnostic obesity, it is very detrimental to your health and causing other health issues. Increased body fat content is inflammatory. This must be kept under control before it is out of control. Please remember what I’ve written other articles regarding inflammatory health conditions and what danger they may cause.

Another condition I hear that other health practitioners report as normal is spinal degeneration, stenosis, and disc bulges. These must always be addressed in the beginning phases, not to be waited until the end. Hence once again, job security for the surgeon, and too much time with you suffering in pain.

Please remember my words when a healthcare provider says that your symptoms are normal. Yes, they may be common, but that does not make them normal.
