The Build Back Better Bill aims to provide a stronger safety net and create jobs. One provision in it, however, will do nothing to help here in Arizona. There is an attempt to add a $4,500 consumer tax credit, but sadly, only the 5 cars built in U.S. union shops will qualify.  This will exclude all of the cars produced here in Arizona and will negatively affect their chances of gaining market share.

Excluding 90% of the cars available in the U.S. from this credit will have a chilling effect on most of the industry – especially here in Arizona. This is just wrong. The goal is to increase “green” vehicles on the road – and it is a laudable one.  But to achieve that goal, the tax credit needs to be applied fairly across the board to all EVs, not just a select few made in only a few states.

Arizona is quickly becoming a major player in the EV market, but if they put this provision in the bill, that will surely change. I am counting on our delegation to oppose this limitation, and support all our workers here in Arizona who are part of this dynamic and growing industry.
