American Dream Act AZ to keep seniors in their homes

The American Dream Act AZ filed an initiative measure to eliminate property taxes on the primary residence for senior citizens over age 65 in Arizona. The initiative will help seniors who own their home but live on a fixed income such as Social Security.

“Many people over 65 can’t work for health reasons and too many seniors in Arizona are losing their home because they can’t afford to pay the property taxes after they retire,” said Lynne Weaver, Director of American Dream Act AZ. “We have many seniors having to make a decision between filling their prescriptions or paying property tax on a home they spent their whole life working to pay off only to lose it to foreclosure because they can’t pay the property taxes,” she added.

Arizona is one of the few states with primary and secondary property taxes. Arizona’s average property tax rate is the highest among several of our neighboring states including New Mexico, Utah and Colorado and is in line with Nevada and California.

Signature collection will begin this week with the initiative needing nearly 360,000 valid signatures to get on the 2020 ballot.
