Fountain Grass Planted in Town Creates Fire Hazard on the Tonto National Forest

A free talk in Cave Creek on how you can help prevent desert wildfires and fires in your community

On Monday, September 24, you can learn about how a commonly used landscaping plant spreads and creates a risk of fire to your home, your neighborhood, and the National Forest that lies adjacent to the Valley of the Sun. At 7:00 PM at the Holland Center’s South Quail Room (34250 N. 60th Street), Patti Fenner will talk with members of the north valley community about the risks presented by two grasses that have been introduced to Arizona from South Africa.

Patti recently retired as the Noxious Weed Program Manager of the Tonto National Forest, and is currently Executive Director and founder of the non-profit Friends of the Tonto National Forest. She has spent many hours mapping and controlling buffelgrass and fountain grass, and has worked to raise awareness of the hazard they create throughout the greater Phoenix area.

This evening is supported by local nurseries Desert Foothills Gardens Nursery and Black Mountain Nursery who have donated coupons for you to purchase discounted native plants to use in the place of fountain grass. Come have some cookies and drinks, learn about how fountain grass in town affects the Tonto National Forest, and see live examples of fountain grass and buffelgrass!

Friends of the Tonto National Forest is a group of volunteers dedicated to assisting the Tonto National Forest in its mission of natural and cultural resource management. They promote public understanding of the Forest’s policies, programs and projects through community outreach, projects and outings.
