Three New Things to Do in the Caribbean

As I sit here thinking about what destination I should highlight for my travel article, it occurred to me that I have clients enjoying their summer vacation in the Caribbean – and I haven’t yet written about this beautiful and popular destination.

If you have not been there, it should be on your travel list. The gorgeous clear turquoise seas, white sand beaches, and relaxed atmosphere that bring to life Jimmy Buffet’s lyrics, “…changes in latitude, changes in attitude…”. When your vacation goal is relaxation, the Caribbean is the perfect destination.

Most people think steel drums, calypso music, rum punch and all-inclusive resorts come to mind when thinking about the Caribbean. These are the iconic symbols that are endemic and endear us to this part of the world. Some of you may have already been to one or more islands in this region and may have decided that there is no reason to return.

Rather than focus on some the most popular tourist destinations and activities, I would like to highlight three new reasons to visit the Caribbean.

Kayak or Paddleboard at Night in Tobago

Tobago is not a Caribbean island known for its rowdy nightlife, but if you’re looking for a different kind of fun, you’re in the right place. You can kayak or paddle board at night in Tobago and enjoy a magnificent light show. Bioluminescent organisms known as dinoflagellates, a marine plankton that give off a blue-green light when the water around them is moved, offer a unique and beautiful way to spend an evening.

Hike the Waitukubuli National Trail in Dominica

Considered the Nature Island, you will see beautiful scenic landscapes on this hike. You don’t want to miss the Morne Trois Piton National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 115 mile hike is not for the faint of heart or physically unprepared, yet you will leave with an unforgettable experience. For those that are not prepared for the long hike, the trail is divided into 14 different sections, so choose the sections that are in tune with your fitness level and interest.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Montserrat

Did you know that St. Patrick’s Day is an official holiday in Montserrat? If you’re looking for a different way to spend your Spring Break, then come on down! The island celebrates for a week with a festive mash-up of Carnivale and Craic. While you’re celebrating, enjoy the lovely view of the mighty Soufriere Hills volcano.

The Caribbean is a beautiful region of the world with many diverse islands and cultures. I recommend you visit and see the popular islands, experience their festivals and see their iconic sites. I also encourage you to take a few steps off the beaten path and try some new and interesting experiences in destinations that may not have been on your travel list.
